Boost in slip sales expected thanks to Naomi Watts

As per the NEW YORK TIMES, Naomi Watts has done for the slip what Jean Harlow did in the ’30s and Elizabeth Taylor did in the ’50s for women’s slips. The Times says Watts works the slip as she “whirls and shimmies like an overheated wind-up toy'’ before King Kong. At the same time, the soft sexiness of the style fits with the romantic mood of spring styles.

Retail stores such as Victoria’s Secret and Bloomingdale’s are forecasting a boost in slip sales, and they are pumping up stock and labels.

“We believe that slips are emerging as a major trend for summer and even into fall,'’ Monica Mitro, spokeswoman for Victoria’s Secret, told the Times.
Marshal Cohen, retail analyst for market research firm NPD Group, told the Times that interest was on the rise among young customers who would sooner have bought a hoop skirt a year ago.

Fashion pundits note that slips have a certain innocence, yet they are sophisticated and womanly. They expect the slip to become an alternative to the wildly popular camisole, which has run its course.

“It’s the pristine version of sexiness,'’ said Susan Rolontz, analyst for the Tobé Report, a fashion consulting service.
